🚁 Position Overview
As our Agronomist, you will take the lead in shaping planting systems that transform degraded lands into thriving, functional ecosystems.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the field, understands the ecological and logistical complexity of agroforestry systems, and can bridge science with community-driven action.
📝 Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute agroforestry planting models customised to site conditions, incorporating native tree species, economic perennials, ecological buffers, and intercropping with annuals to optimise both ecological and livelihood outcomes
- Develop and oversee the execution of plantation activities as per the schedule, including species selection, site prep, transplanting timelines, and post-planting care
- Set up and manage community or central nurseries end-to-end: seed collection, propagation protocols, pest and disease control, and seedling hardening
- Set up demonstration plots to showcase agroforestry models, test approaches, and train local stakeholders
- Provide technical leadership for landscape restoration efforts, including reforestation, afforestation and agroforestry.
- Conduct field assessments and use ecological criteria to plan planting layouts, spacing, and multi-year succession strategies
- Work with geospatial and remote sensing teams to integrate landscape data into field operations
- Train farmers, field teams, and nursery staff on agroforestry best practices - including planting techniques, species handling, nursery operations, and restoration monitoring - to build local capacity and ensure successful implementation.
- Monitor growth performance and survival rates, develop and implement maintenance plans (e.g. irrigation, mulching, gap filling), guide and train field staff, troubleshoot challenges at the farm level, and provide timely, practical solutions to ensure high survival rates and healthy tree growth.
- Collaborate with community leaders, smallholders, and local government agencies to align restoration plans with local needs
- Document processes, learnings, and field results to strengthen Thrive's restoration models and share with partners
